Tomb of the Mysteries
New Orleans Supernatural Radio Theater
The Tomb of the Mysteries – discovered by a mortician and grave digger during a break in his duties, is a dark stone room with an eerie green light emanating from the walls, providing perpetual yet dim, unsettling illumination. The room contains antique wooden file cabinets filled with eldritch reports -including researches into ancient bibliography, summaries of investigations into various ‘cult’ activities, reports by coroners, biochemists, etc., almost always referencing some larger tale or tome: archeological research, nameless books from around the world written in ages past, incident reports, studies into comparative religion, voodoo and other scholarly researches.
Upon the accidental discovery of this mysterious tomb of tantalizing tales, both the cabinet and the room itself was found to be oddly, inexplicably well preserved; surprising, given the appearance of its entrance and surrounding crypt, and even more remarkable given the complete flooding of the area during Hurricane Katrina – an event which led to the spectral subterranean discovery in the first place.
Perhaps the most startling and inexplicable phenomenon associated with the Tomb is the seemingly random appearance of doors – or perhaps more accurately, gateways – that lead to other places on this planet (at least no ‘extra-planetary portals’ have been found yet). These uncanny events, which have been likened to the well known ‘Gates of Hell’ said to exist in far flung corners of the globe, seem to occur whenever a file is removed from the aforementioned cabinet and read aloud. The reader is then permitted (if he dares) to travel to the newly opened destination, and the origins and details of the precipitating document are illuminated. That is to say, those brave enough to read one of these documents aloud is ‘rewarded’ with a viewing of the events summarized in said document. An illuminating experience, though one may question whether the word ‘reward’ is appropriate, as the stories associated with these reports are usually not particularly pleasant – in fact, they have been known to stimulate a state of extreme fear – a cosmic horror, as one psychologist put it after examining a person foolish enough to go though one of these spectral portals and, upon witnessing the events on ‘the other side’, returned completely and permanently insane.
The only person known to have safely travelled through these portals and returned with a full memory of the events he witnessed is Jack Elder. Perhaps this is a part of his blood heratige, as one of his ancestors was a fearless investigative reporter; or perhaps this is due to the fact that Mr. Elder is an expert in the creation of protective talismans. These can be acquired through his website, but, of course he makes no guarrantee of thier efficaciousness.
The only other person know to travel through these gates and come back unscathed is Jack’s apprentice Mr. George P., though he rarely remembers the full details of what is witnessed on the other side, and has been forced to interpret his impressions in music, which are also available on the website.
